Spring 2002 Calf Arrives

March 1, 2002

Black Pond Farm welcomes the arrival of Kaylee Cow's 2002 calf!

March 1st 2002

It was a dark, cold, stormy night at Black Pond Farm...

We were expecting a heavy frost and Tim reported that there was already ice forming in the pond.

All the critters were anxious to be fed that evening, except for Kaylee Cow.  She would take two steps forward, then pause to look over her shoulder and moo softly to the shadows in the distance.

The next morning she introduced her new arrival to the rest of the highland cows.  This little calf was different from the one's we have had in previous years.  It slipped through the fence to rest on the soft grass while all the other animals ate.

Everyone took turns coming over to sniff the new fuzzy calf.  Even the chickens, bunnies and dogs all came to say "hello".

After 45 minutes or so, Kaylee was done eating and looked for her calf.  She let out a couple of soft "Moo" sounds and the little calf stood back up.  It paused a moment at the fence line, then slipped back through to join it's Mother.  This was the daily routine at feeding time for many days thereafter.
