Trail Riding Near Lake Roesiger

A view of the Cascades

Black Pond Farm is located within a mile of Lake Roesiger.  It's a beautiful lakeside community.  Some of the homes were built years ago as cabins and simple outhouses constructed on cleared land sit right next to brand new, large impressive homes with boat houses (complete with shiny ski boats).  The lake itself is large with three "loops".  The dark clouds loomed over-head, but we didn't get rained on until the tail-end of our almost 3 hour ride.

"Come ride with me!"

Our neighbor, Cathie lives one driveway away.  Recently,  her 77-year-old Father move in with her so she could care for him.  Never a complaint. (unless we are talking about her 'love life' -- or lack thereof *giggle*) She's so much fun!  She teases me that she's old enough to be my Mother (actually, she's one year younger).  She has more SPUNK than many 20-year-olds I've known.  She tends to her 5-acres, works a full time job, hauls and splits her own firewood, cares for her two horses, 4 cats, two dogs and a garden pond full of fish among other things.  "Who else is going to do it?  You got your ol' man to do yours, Brenda!"

Since we bought our farm, back in May of 1998, Cathie has invited me to go ride her horses.  I've been raising babies!  Tim had the kids out for rowboat rides and frog catching while we were gone.

This is only the second time we have -- both within months of each other!  I'm not an accomplished rider, so I just try to be "good company".

Logging Roads

We have to ride on country roads for a 1/2 mile to get to the privately owned logging roads.  They go up, up, up...until the views of the Cascades and Lake Roesiger take your breath away.  Cathie's horses are certified for search and rescue and are "bomb proof".  Nothing seems to spook them and they can navigate through very narrow and rugged trails with ease.  Today, I rode "Cindi Sue" and Cathie rode Cindi's son, "Moe".  They are very head-strong, but true blue.  Cindi Sue took off for home at one point.  Granted, WE weren't ready to head for home, but SHE WAS.  No matter what I did, she WASN'T STOPPING -- at a full gallop.   I held on for dear life and could hear Cathie yelling behind me, "MAKE her stop!  BRENDA!  BRENDA!"  Followed by a lot of swearing.  I was doing a fair amount of swearing at that point too...and was able to get my mount back under control.

Brenda riding "Cindi Sue" and Cathie riding "Moe".

Moe, in stark contrast to his Mother, is a big affectionate lug. When we were getting the saddles on them for the ride, he gave me a big sloppy horse kiss -- full on the mouth.  I turned my head just "in time" to get slobbered by horse lips.  "Uh, I like you too."
