Spring Has Sprung March 24, 2001 The first day of spring found me out in our garden with the kids. However, Tim took the arrival of spring to a different level...but we'll get to that a little later.

This year I decided not to go with *just* a vegetable garden. Instead, I wanted to create a flower garden with a few vegetable plants in the center. Last year's garden was such a FLOP! We had a few sad tomato plants and a couple of pumpkins grow. The kids were just too little for me to spend any time tending a garden. I'd watch from the window as the bunnies dashed in and out UNDER the fence helping themselves to the lettuce... This year I have good helpers! It's nice that the gate closes so I can work without concern for their safety. Erin and Preston each have their own "technique" to helping in the garden. Erin likes to dig in the dirt and mimic my actions. She wants to grow carrots. Preston (at almost 17 months) has a completely different approach. He checked out rocks and chunks of dirt. Small dirt clods were then stuffed into his ears -- much care went into this, but (thankfully) he lacks the coordination to hit the target. Even with so much help, I worked my way around the fenced area, laying down logs to edge the new flowerbeds. My folks had given us a box FULL of flower seeds in different color combinations and I was eager to get them planted! We have 5 rose bushes that I transplanted into the new beds. The poor things were munched on by the critters. The potbellied pig LOVES them as a tasty snack! I also did some thinning of bulbs and perennials from other spots in the yard. When I was done, I looked around and realized that I hadn't spent A DIME on this new landscaping project! As I mentioned before, springtime affected Tim in a much different way... He had taken our '91 Range Rover into the dealership that morning for another attempt to fix a number of odd quirks it had developed lately. We still had a mystery light on the dash for no reason and sometimes the windows wouldn't go up or down. Short of lighting a circle of candles and chanting -- they had tried everything -- and charged us big bucks for their time. That evening Tim came up the driveway with a huge grin and a beautiful 1996 Range Rover with all the bells and whistles! WELL... Pretty much blows that "not spending A DIME" thing right out of the water, eh?! What a guy! Yeppers, he's a keeper...
Erin (sporting her gardening apparel) liked Daddy's idea of springtime fun. Here she is checkin' out all the neat buttons and gizmos in the '96 Range Rover he purchased on the first day of spring.

The garden is one of the few "critter free zones" that we have. It is surrounded by a 6' fence with a gate. Of course, that doesn't mean that I won't be writing again in a few months about how the chickens or bunnies hang out in there!
