Who's There?

May 15, 2007

This time of year is when we seem to find critters in the trees.  Likely because the Mothers have turned them out to fend for themselves.  There is always a lot to learn if they will survive in the wilderness. There's those obnoxious farm dogs, humans that stare and won't leave ya' alone...

We haven't had a raccoon spotting for over 8 years.  Having farm dogs has put a stop to that. The last was two very healthy ones that would feast on the dog and cat food.  I heard noises on the porch late one evening and went to investigate.  There in the glare of the porch light were the fat and happy pair looking up at me, "Hey lady.  Got anymore grub?"

Here is a young raccoon wondering why we "smelly humans" are all gathered around the base of the tree it is hiding in.  This one was very small in comparison to the two I'd seen so many years ago. It was doing it's very best to be invisible, but we still had plenty of time to snap pictures. Look how well it's coloring works to help camouflage it in the tree.
