Snow At Black Pond Farm 1998

Just before Christmas we had "the big snow" here at the farm.
Translated, that's about a foot and a half for our friends in Chicago.

Naturally, as the snow began to fall we realized that we needed to do a
"feed run" for all our critters and groceries for us too.

Thankfully, we had purchased a shiny new Ford 4X4 truck the previous
weekend -- after Tim
insisted that we should.  Quite frankly, I
thought he was being irrational at the time, cuz' we already had a farm
truck.  I was way-outta'-line -- if it weren't for the 4X4 we would have
been snowed in! (Men
DO have intuition!)

Well, on the morning of the snowstorm, Tim got up early and "turned in
the hubs" for a trip into town.  It turned into a four-hour trek for a
few hundred pounds of feed.  Upon his return, we loaded Erin into her
car seat and went for groceries.  I had a serious case of cabin fever and
so an adventure was in order.

The snow continued to fall as we completed our shopping.  Back in the
parking lot we loaded the truck with our supplies, when I noticed a
CHICKEN ducking in-and-out under the parked cars near our truck.  I
thought to myself, "Only in
SNOHOMISH would you find a chicken wandering
around in a busy snow-covered parking lot!"

I called it to Tim's attention, and then it hit me, "Ohmygawd!  That's one
of
MY hens!"

Tim asked,
"Are you sure?"

Okay, so I may have over forty chickens, but I knew for-a-fact that she
was one of mine.  We believe that she had crawled up into the engine
compartment to get warm (probably laid an egg too) and managed to ride
all the way into town with us!  We chased Henny all over that parking
lot, but alas, could not catch her.

My heart sank as I realized that we had to leave her behind until she
settled down for the evening.  Back at the farm, I called the store and
spoke to the manager on duty.  He assured me that it was a very common
occurrence (like I said -- only in Snohomish) and that he would call me
if someone caught her.

Well, she was gone -- never to be seen again.

Someone saw my healthy laying hen

and took her right back home to their flock,

thrilled at the "great find".

Sigh

Yep. Only in Snohomish.
