Campfire
Songs
The Black Pond Junior Ranger program was inspired by
YMCA Camp Loowit.

The camp was destroyed with the eruption of Mt. St. Helens on May 18,1980, but the fond memories remain. Below are the lyrics to a few favorite campfire and Mess Hall songs:
A-GOONG WENT THE LITTLE GREEN FROG
A-goong went the little green frog
A-goong went the little green frog
A-goong went the little green frog one day
And his eyes went, A-a-goong
THE MORE WE ARE TOGETHER
The more we get together
Together, together
The more we get together
The happier we'll be
For your friends are my friends
And my friends are your friends
The more we get together
The happier we'll be
The more we sing together
Together, together
The more we sing together
The happier we'll be
Cause your song is my song
And my song is your song
The more we sing together
The happier we'll be
THE BEAR WENT OVER THE MOUNTAIN
The bear went over the mountain
The bear went over the mountain
The bear went over the mountain
To see what he could see
To see what he could see
To see what he could see
The bear went over the mountain
To see what he could see
The other side of the mountain
The other side of the mountain
The other side of the mountain
Was all that he could see
Was all that he could see
Was all that he could see
The other side of the mountain
Was all that he could see.
GOIN' ON A Bear HUNT
(repeat chant)
Goin' on a bear hunt
I ain’t scared
Got my gun by my side
And bullets too!
Comin' to some grass
Can’t go over it
Can’t go under it
Gotta' go through it!
Comin' to a tree
Can’t go under it
Can’t go around it
Gotta' go up it!
Comin' to a bridge
Can’t go beside it
Can’t go down it
Gotta' go over it!
Comin' to an outhouse
Can’t go over it
Don’t wanna' go under it
Gotta' go around it!
Comin' to a cave
It’s dark in this cave
There’s something furry in here
There’s two eyes
And a wet nose
It’s a bear!
(Repeat steps backwards as you run away!)
MY AUNT CAME BACK
Add an additional motion for each item
Everyone repeat each line:
My Aunt came back
From old Japan
And brought with her,
An old hand fan.
My Aunt came back
From old Algiers,
And brought with her,
A pair of shears.
My Aunt came back,
From Holland too,
And brought with her
A wooden shoe.
My Aunt came back From the New York fair,
And brought with her,
A rocking chair
My Aunt came back,
From Niagara falls,
And brought with her,
Some ping pong balls.
My Aunt came back,
From Timbuktu,
And brought with her,
Some gum to chew.
My Aunt came back,
From Kalamazoo,
And brought with her,
Some nuts like YOU!
KUM BY YA
Kum by ya my Lord, kum by ya
Kum by ya my Lord, kum by ya
Kum by ya my Lord, kum by ya
Oh, Lord kum by ya.
Someone’s crying Lord, kum by ya
Someone’s praying Lord, kum by ya
“ singing “
“ laughing “
Come by here my Lord, come by here
DAY IS DONE
Day is done, Gone the sun,
From the lake, from the hills,
From the sky; All is well,
Safely rest, God is nigh.
Fading light dims the sight,
And a star gems the sky
Gleaming bright, from a-far,
Drawing nigh, Falls the night.
WAITING TO
BE FED
(TUNE: Old Grey Mare)
Each cabin had there own verse that they made up. The song was sung outside the mess hall (on deck in photo) and each cabin added their verse as it moved from group to group. I recall, "sit like bumps on a cedar log..."
Here we stand like birds in the wilderness,
Birds in the wilderness,
Birds in the wilderness,
Here we stand like birds in the wilderness,
Waiting to be fed.
OH! Waiting to be fed,
OH! Waiting to be fed,
Here we stand like birds in the wilderness,
Waiting to be fed.

All
About Manors
Heaven forbid if you forget your manors in the mess hall…here are a few of the chants:
Duncan, Duncan <insert any name> you big sap
get your napkin in your lap!
round the mess hall you must go,
you must go, you must go
round the mess hall you must go
you are lazy.....go, go, go, go!
Duncan Duncan <insert any name> young and able
get your elbows off the table!
round the mess hall you must go,
you must go. you must go
round the mess hall you must go
you are lazy.....go, go, go, go!
There’s one for spills, using your hands instead of utensils…Everyone at your table must notice and sing at the SAME time. I know there was one for singing alone too.
Rise and Shine
This song was sung in the mornings at the breakfast table whenever the spirit moved somebody! Everyone always clapped their way through this song with a punctuated clap in the middle of the third line of every verse: CHORUS: Rise and shine and give God the glory glory
Rise and shine and give God the glory glory
